When I finally came back to myself, it was with the uncomfortable feeling that I was wearing someone else's skin. I couldn't focus on it too much without the edges of the world greying out into a fugue, but it was there. I looked down and could see that I was wearing some kind of stiff leather armor that felt too small around the mid...oh, of course it did.
"All set? We need to move before that dragon tears the place to the ground around us. I'm Hadvar, by the way."
I hefted the comforting weight of a heavy sword in my right hand and the shield strapped to my left arm. This I understood. I was good at hitting things. I nodded to Hadvar and he opened the door leading deeper into the keep. He started forward into the keep, "We should be able to escape through the dungeons. There's a way out down there."
We came to another door and he opened it into a large, sun-lit room to see two pairs of men fighting. One pair was wearing armor similar to mine, and the others appeared to be from the group that I had been standing with when this started. With a shout, Hadvar ran into the room and attacked one of the ex-prisoners from behind, striking a brutal blow that must have cracked bone through his armor. I started forward after him, hands sweaty and the smell of blood and sweat and fear hit me and I could feel myself slide in close to one of the fighters and ram my sword through his chest. The grating feel of steel on bone rasped through me with the roaring that I realized now had never stopped and then it was done and I had to not look at the bodies and the blood or I knew that I would lose myself again in whatever the fog was and I didn't want that again.
I felt myself kneel down and clean the sword on one of the dead, only now noticing that all four had fallen in the fight. I fought down the fog and desire to be sick and stood. "Let's go." How could I sound so calm?
Hadvar looked me over before opening the next door. I followed along, feeling my hand tighten painfully around the hilt of my sword. We entered into a storage area and it was deserted. I heard him say, "Stand watch over by that door for a minute. I think there are some potions in here we can use if we get into more fights." He started digging around and I lost myself in the fog again when I couldn't get the faces of the dead men out of my mind.
